G7 Summit Carbon Free Transport Hubs

Since the London Olympics, Sunbelt Rentals has provided temporary infrastructure solutions for Stadium Management. Our 360 Solutions team is now supporting Stadium Management’s three-year program to provide major events for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The 47th G7 Summit was the first of these high-profile projects, based in St. Ives in Cornwall, UK.

The G7 Summit occurred 11-13 June 2021. We had worked closely with our customer Stadium Management for several months prior to this to co-design and deliver a carbon-neutral solution. Our hubs were in situ for approximately four weeks, including build and demobilisation.

The Challenge

The UK Government declared the G7 summit (11 to 13 June 2021) would be ‘carbon neutral’, complying with international quality standards for sustainable events management. The G7 world leaders gathering at Carbis Bay in Cornwall from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the US, with leaders from Australia, South Africa and South Korea meant the eyes of the world were on the success of this project.

Sunbelt Rentals was involved from the initial planning phase, which meant our experts could help design the most sustainable and practical solution possible using today’s low carbon technology.

The Solution 

With climate change and the global pandemic high on the agenda, the key infrastructure requirements around the G7 had to ensure that a sustainable and safe solution was delivered.

Sunbelt Rental’s 360 Solutions team developed a low carbon, diesel free event solution for customer Stadium Management, creating two transport and logistic hubs to support this high profile/security event.

We surveyed each site using drone technology, and designed each site from the ground up, specifying our unique hand-installed Trakway system which is constructed from recycled aluminium for its strength and sustainability. Two local sports grounds were used to build the sites, so this product ensured that their playing surfaces remained fully protected from heavy vehicle damage.

The two sites also took advantage of our low-emission plant and solar lighting, minimising emissions and virtually eliminating operational noise, a key benefit in the suburban areas.

The event’s security services utilised our eco welfare cabins, conserving energy on cooling, heating and lighting. These were coupled with our smart power generation systems which only generated power when demanded. All power generators ran on Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil (HVO), reducing carbon output by 93%, which is 63,700kg of carbon when compared to traditional fuels.

For this event, we also introduced our new electric bike fleet. This assisted the operational and security teams to take advantage of a carbon free, safer and much more sustainable mode of transport across the extensive transport hub sites, especially beneficial around the narrow, easily congested pedestrianised streets of St. Ives.

We’ve seen what Sunbelt can do by bringing everything together as one co-ordinated approach and we’re impressed with what’s been delivered, ahead of budget and ahead of time. From an organisational point of view, having one point of contact on site has been great. If we have design changes on site, we can rapidly address them and the benefits of having equipment arriving from one supplier makes life so much easier.

The Results

A fully designed and installed temporary infrastructure solution was provided to manage the transport and logistics to support the delivery of the main event. We also offered a fully managed service throughout the entire event as well as a full demobilisation service, all to the satisfaction of our clients and all local stakeholders.
