Introduction

Since 2010, Lendlease has been working in partnership with Southwark Council to deliver ‘Elephant Park’, a £2.3 billion
regeneration project in Elephant & Castle which is set to become the first Climate Positive development in the UK. The
development consists of thousands of high quality new homes, jobs, business opportunities and green space alongside new
offices, leisure, community facilities and shops.

The Southwark Construction Skills Centre is located on the development and trains experienced site personnel, as well as
apprentices and new entrants to the construction industry who live locally. Since 2016, A-Plant’s Tool Hire Express on-site
facility has been co-located with the Skills Centre, providing free of charge tools, equipment and plant to help the students
learn real life skills on the equipment that the Lendlease and contractor teams also use.

The Tool Hire Express facility is managed full time by our On Site team, one of whom is a graduate of the Skills Centre and
is living proof of the project’s success in delivering social value to the local community.

Challenge

The Supply Chain was challenged to help the Elephant Park team in minimising dust and air pollution, increasing efficiencies
and improving site safety.

Solution

A-Plant and its supplier Hilti were pleased to collaborate together in providing a demonstration day for site personnel,
showcasing the very latest cutting and drilling technology available in a controlled safe area.

Results

Approximately 30 site personnel and groundworks apprentices were trained in the safe and efficient use of the very latest
innovations available, using dust-extraction and dust control equipment to reduce the occurrence of dust particles in the
atmosphere.

There was particular interest and a focus on training with a brand new cut-off saw, which will benefit operatives own
personal safety and well-being, at the same time as contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for local
residents.

The Hilti team also showcased the latest in battery hand tool technology solutions, which improve safety on site and also
reduce cost, due to their cordless technology reducing the need for power generation on site.
Alan Clarke, Strategic Account Manager said, “There was great engagement from the Skills Centre and project teams
alike and fantastic support as always from our Hilti supply chain. It was a pleasure to share the best in class dust control
solutions to such a prestigious project team, who are already beacons for sustainability in their own right.”

Thank you to A-Plant and Hilti for an outstanding day - our apprentices learned so much! Itis so important to reinforce the message about ‘safety first’ – hearing hints and tips first-handfrom the experts and being able to ‘have a go’ is invaluable. Our students all learnt how to getthe best out of their equipment which will help them work more efficiently and safely on site!
