Sleeper Drill FAQs

Sleeper drills are used to drill into railway sleepers so fixings, fastenings and track components can be installed accurately. They’re designed for rail environments, where teams need a reliable way to drill into timber or other sleeper materials during installation, repair and maintenance work.

The main advantage is that they’re built around the job, not adapted from general construction use. A sleeper drill helps the operator drill clean, consistent holes in the right position, which is important when preparing sleepers for screws, bolts, chairs or other rail fixings. Depending on the model, they may be used by hand or with supporting equipment to help position the drill and make repeated drilling easier on site.

Sleeper drills are commonly used during track renewals, sleeper replacement, rail installation, depot works and maintenance possessions. Battery models can be a good option where lower noise and zero emissions at point of use are important, while petrol models may suit other site conditions where a robust standalone power source is needed.
