Fleet decarbonisation plan

A significant amount of our scope 1 and 2 emissions come from our vehicle fleet, including vans, cars and light commercial vehicles. Transitioning our vehicle fleet to low and zero carbon emission vehicles is fundamental to our net-zero road map and green car fleet policy to accelerate the transition away from diesel.

• Cars: By the end of FY24 we had 550+ company cars of which; 39% fully electric, 55% plug-in hybrid (PHEV), 5% hybrid and 1% diesel.

• LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) electrification: We’re rolling out electric vans at sites where daily travel distances allow, this with acceleration planned into the coming years.

• HGV Smart vehicle management to plan and track applicable vehicles through onboard telematics. This ensures location-based tracking of fuel use and CO2 emissions, speed limiters to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, route and load optimisation to cut unnecessary mileage and fuel-efficient tyres and pressure monitoring.

Renewable fuel

For our heavy-duty fleet, where electrification and other zero-emission alternatives remain limited, we are increasing the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) renewable diesel. HVO fuel can replace diesel with no changes required to the engine or operational infrastructure.

During the year, we began trialling onsite HVO fuelling at one of our Manchester locations to assess the benefits and challenges of onsite HVO fuelling. In the six months to 31 October 2025, we replaced over 113,000 litres of diesel with HVO onsite, resulting in savings of over 285 tCO2e.
LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) electrification: We are rolling out electric vans at sites where daily travel distances allow, with acceleration planned in the coming years.
Fleet management: Our transport team has adopted a smart vehicle management, planning and tracking system to manage our fleet of delivery vehicles. HGV smart vehicle management includes onboard telematics, ensuring location-based tracking of fuel use and CO2 emissions, speed limiters to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, route and load optimisation to cut unnecessary mileage, and fuel-efficient tyres with pressure monitoring.
Reducing emissions from heating: We have developed a property minimum standard for our 191 locations. We follow an ongoing refurbishment and upgrade programme which includes gas boiler upgrades, improved insulation and other technologies such as automatic roller shutter doors that reduce heat loss from workshops when left open. We are on track to complete the installation of gas loggers. To date, 63% of sites have gas smart meters, and we remain on track to complete the rollout.
