As people come in all shapes and sizes, it's unlikely that one type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everybody.

How face fit testing works


Face fit testing is carried out by a competent, trained technician and usually takes around 25 minutes per person.


During the test, the wearer completes a series of exercises such as normal breathing, head movement and talking to simulate real working conditions and make sure the mask maintains an effective seal throughout.

During the test, the wearer completes a series of standard exercises, including:

ExerciseDescription
Normal breathingThe wearer should breathe normally with no head movements or talking.
Deep breathingThe wearer should breathe slowly and deeply, taking care not to hyperventilate.
Turning head side to sideThe wearer should turn head slowly from side to side, pausing at each extreme position to inhale.
Moving head up and downThe wearer should move head up and down slowly and inhale when looking up toward the ceiling.
TalkingThe wearer should talk slowly and loudly enough to be heard, reading a passage or counting down from 100.
Bending overThe wearer should bend at the waist as if touching toes, then return upright. Repeat 10–15 times.

The different types of face fit testing

Qualitative Face Fit Testing

Qualitative face fit testing is a pass/fail method based on the wearer's ability to detect a test agent, typically a bitter or sweet aerosol.


If the wearer can taste or smell the test agent, this indicates leakage around the face seal and shows that the mask isn't providing an effective fit.


This method is suitable for disposable masks and reusable half masks, and is commonly used where a simple, reliable assessment is required.

Quantitative Face Fit Testing

Quantitative face fit testing uses specialist equipment to measure the level of leakage into the mask and calculate a numerical fit factor.


This provides an objective assessment of how well the mask seals to the wearer's face, giving a precise and reliable result.


It's suitable for full face masks, as well as disposable and reusable masks, and is necessary for higher-risk environments where a more detailed level of accuracy is needed.
