A band saw is a good choice when you want controlled, straight cuts through metal without the same level of sparks produced by an abrasive cutting disc. Angle grinders are more versatile for grinding and cutting in awkward positions, but band saws can be better suited to repeated cutting of pipes and sections.

Start with the largest material you'll be cutting. The cordless band saws in our range have cutting capacities from around 85mm to 140mm. Check both the material dimensions and the machine's cutting capacity, particularly when working with square or rectangular sections.

Band saws generally produce far fewer sparks than abrasive cutting discs because they cut using a toothed blade rather than grinding through the metal. However, they still create metal swarf, and you need to take appropriate precautions for the material and working environment.

Blade choice depends on the material and its thickness. The tooth pitch, usually measured in teeth per inch (TPI), is particularly important. Thin-walled materials generally need a finer tooth pitch, while thicker solid sections can use a coarser blade. The blade must also fit the particular saw.
