This Tunnelling Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) is a one-day course designed for those who are involved in the tunnel construction industry as a member of the workforce to help them understand a variety of different aspects of the industry, the associated working environment, and some of the potential hazards that they may face working on a tunnelling site. 

The development of this course was an industry-led solution supported by CITB, TunnelSkills and the British Tunnelling Society (BTS). From concept through to delivery, contractors, clients, and providers have been consulted, often with direct input into development. 

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials.

Agenda:  

• Being aware of legislation and standards specific to tunnelling 
• Understanding the health, safety and occupational hazards and PPE requirements in the tunnelling environment 
• Being able to understand risk assessment principles and risk management practice in a tunnelling environment and how these risks are identified and communicated 
• Knowing the generic operations taking place within portals, shaft top and pit bottom areas, and their relevance to the tunnelling operation 
• Understanding the basic principles of tunnel construction, tunnelling methods, and their inherent risks, and how ground types influence each method 
• Understanding the hazards and controls required with plant, equipment and services in tunnelling operations 
• Assessment 

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although delegates must be competent in English. 

This is a one-day course. Delegates are required to complete the full course to be eligible for certification. 

Following the successful completion of the course, delegates will be awarded a digital CITB Site Safety Plus certificate that is valid for 5 years. To remain certified in this area, delegates will need to retake the course before the expiry date. 

Companies who are CITB registered and meet their grant scheme eligibility requirements may be able to claim a short course duration grant. Please contact us for further information.
