The Challenge
National Grid, in line with their sustainability plan, were looking for a site that could get as near to carbon neutral as possible.
The Solution
Sunbelt Rentals embraced the challenge of creating a sustainable site by incorporating green and carbon-neutral solutions into every aspect of the project.
The journey began 16 months earlier with an initial assessment of the site’s needs. Eco Accommodation was installed as offices for both National Grid and their contractors, setting the stage for a comprehensive approach to sustainability. The primary objective was to facilitate the installation of a new shunt reactor situated within the substation, an upgrade to ensure operational efficiency.
Sunbelt Rentals expanded this eco-friendly foundation by integrating a range of green solutions into its offerings. The approach was to prioritise the environmental impact of every product needed on site. If fully carbon-neutral equipment wasn’t available, the best sustainable alternative was implemented.
Key components included battery-powered equipment, solar-powered lighting and surveillance, BSU, Fuel Electric MEWPs, Stage V Plant and many other sustainable solutions.
Additionally, Ed Walsh, who Sunbelt Rentals had worked with previously at Jordanthorpe, Pitsmoor, and other substations, actively encouraged contractors to use Sunbelt Rentals products. This ensured National Grid received reliable offerings and
maintained a consistent approach to meeting the site’s carbon neutral requirements.
During the final stages of our project, National Grid sought the expertise of Sunbelt Rentals as the Shunt Reactor was transported on the final leg of it’s journey from Nijmegen, The Netherlands to the UK. The entire event was filmed and a video, including time-lapse, was created to showcase the installation of the shunt reactor into its bund, signifying a significant milestone in the project’s progress.
The Result
The 14-month project concluded with National Grid delighted with Sunbelt Rentals management and sustainable innovative solutions. The success of the Stocksbridge Project has prompted National Grid to consider replicating the approach in future projects, highlighting the potential for Sunbelt Rentals to become a trusted 360-degree provider.
Looking ahead to future collaborations, Sunbelt Rentals aims to build upon the achievements of the Stocksbridge Project, introducing new innovations and expanding its service offerings to further advance sustainability goals.
