blog 26 Apr 2024

With the Film & TV industry in the UK and across the island of Ireland rapidly expanding, providing focused training across various crafts and trades is essential. This includes upskilling seasoned technicians and enabling others to advance in their respective fields. New and returning entrants face unique challenges and require exposure to the current levels of expertise in the industry.

In partnership with Northern Ireland Screen and supported by the BFI Skills Cluster Fund, Sunbelt Rentals organised a comprehensive 5-day camera operators’ course in Belfast. Led by industry veterans Rodrigo Gutierrez, ACO, BSC, and Dave Morgan, ACO, the course challenged seven students with intensive training.

The SCREEN cluster is funded by National Lottery funding from the British Film Institute (BFI) and delivered by Northern Ireland Screen in consultation with industry to support the skills development and professional growth of local crew and aspiring crew.

The course covered extensive aspects of the camera operator’s role, including professional etiquette and teamwork with directors, DOPs, and grips to capture the best footage. Participants practised using hand held cameras, tripods, fluid and geared heads and dollies and advanced to operating a 50-foot Moviebird crane with a stabilised head.

Sunbelt Rentals provided state-of-the-art equipment, including the Arri Alexa 35 camera with a variety of prime and zoom lenses, full range of camera accessories and a peewee dolly, creating an authentic film set environment. The presence of volunteer 1st and 2nd camera assistants, camera trainees and grips enhanced the learning experience, drawing on the tutors’ expertise.

As the first course of its kind at Sunbelt Rentals in Belfast, the workshop was a resounding success. Participants gained crucial insights and skills, as highlighted in the glowing reviews, students commented:

“A very worthwhile course for every camera department personnel, regardless of their grade. Understanding the operator's needs and constraints was insightful.
