Possession Success at Euxton

Balfour Beatty delivered a major track overhaul at Euxton Junction, near Chorley, over the spring bank holiday in 2020.

These essential upgrades were to the West Coast Main Line between London Euston, the North West and Scotland to improve reliability for future train services and to help prepare the way for HS2.

The Challenge

To ensure minimal disruption to passengers the work is planned to take place at night and during weekends, when fewer trains are running, and passenger numbers are less.

Balfour Beatty required a reliable and expert plant and equipment supplier to ensure tight timescales are adhered to and safe, effective equipment is always on hand.

The Solution

We have worked on numerous rail possessions, and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to any rail project. The team was delighted to be working as sole supplier for Balfour Beatty on the Euxton Junction possession.

To prepare for the 74.5-hour possession, we worked collaboratively with the Balfour Beatty renewals team at Crewe over an eight-week period. This enabled the team to provide guidance on the best products for the job and to work with the customer to minimise any potential risks.

Drawing from our expertise as rail specialists, we went to site to establish the working area prior to the work taking place. The team completed a full site set up for Balfour Beatty, which includes:

  • A signing in office
  • Welfare cabins
  • An on-site canteen
  • Tool containers
  • Waste disposal facilities

To deliver the right products for the engineers during the work, we advised on and sourced the best equipment available to ensure an efficient and effective possession. The equipment included:

  • Small tools
  • Petrol plant
  • Stressing equipment
  • Triple wacker plates
  • Clipping machines
  • On-site fitter and operator cover

Due to its national location, numerous service centres and vast stock of directly owned products the team could be agile to any changing demands as the project gets underway.

The Results

The team completed an extensive site set up and put all equipment in place ready for a successful possession. We prepared comprehensive and efficient products for supply that gave the engineers the safest and most effective ways of working. Overall, the team was vital in the planning and preparation of this project to help minimise disruption and avoid delays.
