Advanced Industrial Climber

See Course Dates

A more advanced version of the one-day Occasional Industrial Climber course. This is designed for workers who access masts, towers and similar structures using fall arrest systems and work positioning techniques.

This enhanced course will also provide the skills and knowledge to allow workers to move more independently around towers or masts.

They will also gain the practical skills and knowledge to rescue or evacuate an injured/suspended colleague to ground level.

Course Syllabus:
Theory
  • The effect of fall factors in an industrial location.
  • The need for careful assessment of the rescue implications prior to commencing the work task.
  • Have an awareness of hazards relating to work at height such as dropped objects, exposure to environmental conditions, etc., and the importance of risk assessment prior to commencing the task.
Practical
  • The use of double lanyards to climb and traverse around a tower or mast; this will include ascent and descent of a 25m structure.
  • Installation of temporary fall arrest equipment and systems for access on towers and masts.

All delegates will be fully conversant with an appropriate rescue system. This will normally include: -

  • The use of a self-locking descender to abseil.
  • How to free the casualty from suspension with the minimum exposure to risk.
  • The use of a rescue kit containing a self-locking descender to access a casualty and evacuate them down to safety.

Delegates must be 18 years and over, and all delegates must be able to certify they are physically fit and have no medical conditions that might prevent them from working at height prior to commencement of training.

This course is designed for those who intend to access towers, masts, or similar structures using fall arrest systems and work positioning techniques to carry out work at height. They will also be able to rescue or evacuate an injured/suspended colleague to ground level.

On completion of the course, they should be able to install temporary access systems on masts, towers and similar structures. They will also be able to climb using a double-legged lanyard and safely position themselves to work at height.

During training, delegates will be expected to carry out activities at height. This will provide insight into the delegates’ ability to operate in such conditions. This only indicates their capability, as it is impossible to recreate exact working environments.

The actual height and exposure will be set out on the certification, but this is only to show what was included in the training. The height shown on the certification is not intended to limit the height at which the delegate can operate.

On successful completion, delegates will receive a Spanset certificate valid for three years.
