This City & Guilds course reflects the national occupational standard for planning, managing and reviewing legislative and safety compliance for work in confined spaces and covers water and non-water industry areas. 

Water: this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment processes, drain and sewer cleaning operations, where the operative is working in or near water or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding 

Non-water: this may include pharmaceutical, petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling. 

This City and Guild’s course is endorsed by Energy and Utility Skills. 

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials and assignments that will need to be completed and submitted by delegates after the initial course. 

Agenda:  

  • Planning the management of work in confined spaces 
  • Managing confined space teams 
  • Recording and reviewing legislation relating to confined spaces 
  • Developing, monitoring and confirming procedures for working in confined spaces 
  • Understanding environmental, legislative and health and safety compliance 
  • Understanding organisational requirements for confined space working 
  • Understanding plant, tools and equipment for working in confined spaces 
  • Understanding emergency arrangements and rescue plans 
  • Assessments – both written and a portfolio of evidence 

This four-day course (additional portfolio work is also required) is for managers who are responsible for organising, planning and managing work in confined spaces. The manager may or may not supervise the actual job. It involves managing the work of others in or at confined spaces, reviewing legal requirements, ensuring safety compliance, preparing procedures and appropriate documentation, and making suitable arrangements for dealing with emergencies. 

Delegates must have suitable knowledge and experience and have completed one of the following qualifications before commencing the course: 

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety 
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety 
  • City & Guilds Level 6 Occupational Health and Safety 
  • NCRQ Level 6 Certificate in Applied Health and Safety 
  • NVQ Level 5 or Level 6 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice 

Delegates must ensure they have achieved the required qualification before they enrol on the course and should provide evidence at the point of booking. Evidence can only be accepted in the form of certified copies of certificates. 

Delegates must also bring with them a laptop for use on the course with MS Word installed. 

Following successful completion of the course, delegates' results will be audited by a City & Guilds quality assurance process. On completion, a Level 4 Award in Plan, Manage and Review Legislative and Safety Compliance for Work in Confined Spaces (6160-06) certificate will be issued (please note the quality assurance process may take up to 12 weeks).
