The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments. Delegates will be assessed through a mixture of CPCS technical tests.
These will include:

- Responding to the recognised signals for controlling crane operations.
- Deciding whether a particular load is within the capacity of the crane.
- Carrying out minor adjustments and routine maintenance.
- Understanding the capabilities of the equipment and any relevant safety precautions, including the out-of-service procedure.
- Operating safe-load indicators and overload warning devices.
- Understanding the effect of the working radius on the lifting capacity of the machine.
- Securing, checking, and maintaining counterweights effectively.
- Gauging the effect of shock loading on structural strength and stability.
- Recognising the principles of safe slinging and the types and capacities of lifting gear, security, and balance of load.
- Observing statutory regulations in respect of lifting equipment and the operator’s own legal responsibilities.
All delegates must have successfully passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test, often referred to as the touch screen test, within the past two years.
Delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English and be comfortable with working at height.
Successful delegates will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card (on successful completion of the CPCS Technical Tests).
Companies that are CITB registered and meet their grant scheme eligibility requirements may be able to claim a short course duration grant. Please contact us for further information.
