Dual View Safety on the A19

We are a strategic supply partner supporting Costain to deliver major improvements to the Testos Roundabout on the A19 in the North East.

The upgrade began in March 2019. It involves construction of a flyover over the existing roundabout and new slip roads being built to connect it to the A184. Once complete it will alleviate severe congestion and unlock development potential at the nearby Nissan and International Advanced Manufacturing Park.

We are providing vital equipment to Costain to support delivery of this project.

The Challenge

Within the construction industry operating any large machinery or plant can be hazardous.

Dumper trucks traditionally have restricted views making manoeuvring or reversing potentially dangerous. In fact, most fatal injuries involving dumpers are caused by collision when the dumper is reversing or going forwards on site, or by overturning (according to the Health and Safety Executive).

The Solution

At the forefront of evolving technology and safer working practices, we were one of the first companies in the UK to purchase the innovative Dual View dumper trucks.

Launched in early 2019 by Wacker Neuson, the new vehicles enable the operator to conveniently and quickly change the seat position through a 180-degree rotation. This means the operator always has full visibility ahead – when unloading the operator faces the skip, and before continuing to drive the seat is turned so the operator has an unrestricted view in the driving direction.

This functionality means the operator always has a perfect view of the direction of travel during transport, loading and tipping. Therefore, minimising collision risks and significantly enhancing site safety.

The Results

We worked closely with Costain to put one of the new Dual View dumper trucks onto the A19 Testos Roundabout site.

These vehicles add significant value to a large-scale project such as this, where many suppliers are delivering services at the same time, in the same location.

It is a complex site and being able to manoeuvre safely around it is vital. With the new vehicles, the operator sees where they are driving at all times, it removes the need for reversing completely and puts them in control of being able to spot in good time any potential hazards.

Once the new Dual View dumper truck was in service on the site we collaborated with Costain's sub-contractors and got agreement from them to put five more of the vehicles on the project. These were secured on behalf of Seymour Civil Engineering, Mason Street Furniture and Sword Group.

This brought further value to the client as the bulk order meant a cost saving of over 12% was passed on, plus site safety was further enhanced.

As part of Costain’s ongoing working relationship with Highways England, the Wacker Neuson Dual View Dumper was identified as one of the safest pieces of equipment to use on their projects. Sunbelt, which is Costain’s strategic supply partner, supplied us with a unit on the A19 project. We were happy to introduce Sunbelt to our Civils Contractor, who in turn ordered a further five dumpers for their works.
