Tunstead Cement

Tunstead is a significant and historically important operation within Tarmac, and includes quarrying, lime, building products and cement operations.

The combined operation is one of the largest in the UK, extracting between five and six million tonnes of limestone per annum. The site also produces aggregates for the construction industry.

An annual maintenance shutdown is carried out at Tunstead cement plant, during which many different contractors with a range of specialist skills are used. A temporary accommodation complex was needed to provide welfare facilities, canteen areas, offices, drying rooms, changing rooms and toilets for the shutdown team comprising over 120 operatives. A-Plant Accommodation won the contract to supply the accommodation units for the 2019 shutdown and Tarmac was so impressed with the quality of the units and the service provided, that the contract was again awarded to A-Plant Accommodation for the 2020 shutdown.

The Challenge

The accommodation units were required not long after the Christmas break and the quarry shutdown was brought forward by a week. The A-Plant Accommodation team at the Manchester Accommodation depot ensured that the units were delivered and fully operational by the required deadline. A-Plant Accommodation’s Project Manager also supported Tarmac with the full planning process, providing detailed lifting documents and planning deliveries. This was originally a four day installation due to the amount of accommodation units being delivered, but A-Plant Accommodation was able to get the whole site installed in just two days.

The Solution

The team at A-Plant Accommodation’s Manchester depot supplied 25 high quality accommodation units to the customer’s exact specification. The kitchens, walls and doors had to be in specific places to suit the site set-up and the team also met the requirements for early delivery. The units were delivered on a 82T front loading HIAB -one of the newest vehicles operated by A-Plant Accommodation’s haulage provider.

The Results

The accommodation units were all in place and fully operational to ensure that the shutdown team had high quality temporary accommodation and welfare facilities throughout the duration of the shutdown.

Thanks to all at A-Plant for the timely and professional delivery and installation of the accommodation for this year’s shutdown, especially in view of the challenges and the Buxton weather.
Phil Barber, Tarmac plc

The biggest challenge for this project was delivering the accommodation units earlier than expected and installing the whole complexof 25 units in just two days. The A-Plant Accommodation installation team and the HIAB operator stayed on-site late into the night on day two to ensure the final units were in place. This project really does show that A-Plant Accommodation team is willing to go the extra mile to ensure the customer is fully satisfied.
