This course is designed for delegates who have been appointed the “Responsible Person” for Legionella within a business, specifically related to covering the control of legionella in cooling towers, in addition to hot and cold-water systems.  

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based tutorials and practical assignments. Delegates will be assessed through a mixture of theory and practical tests. 

These will include: 

  • Knowledge of the origins of Legionnaires' disease and the legionella bacteria, as well as the factors that facilitate their proliferation in engineered water systems. 
  • The specific role of the ‘Responsible Person’.  
  • An awareness of current legal requirements, approved codes of practice, and best practice guidance. 
  • Basic design of water systems and contractor management. 
  • Interpreting and reviewing legionella risk assessments as defined in BS 8580-1. 
  • Interpreting and reviewing logbooks (electronic and paper). 
  • Practical skills for monitoring and inspecting hot and cold-water systems, and for weekly monitoring of evaporative cooling systems. 
  • Application of cooling water treatment chemicals.  
  • Understanding the desired outcomes and performance metrics used by water treatment specialists. 
  • Understanding inspection, cleaning, and disinfection requirements in line with the HSE’s HSG274. 

This course is suited to the assigned Responsible Person for controlling legionella levels (cooling towers) within their workplace or relevant location. 

Successful delegates will receive a City & Guilds “Certificate of Attainment” for this Legionella Responsible Persons Training (Cooling Towers) Course.  

Companies who are CITB registered and meet their grant scheme eligibility requirements may be able to claim for a short course duration grant. Please contact us for further information.
