Branston Locks

To meet the high demand for affordable, high-quality housing in the area, Lovell were
appointed to construct a development in Branston Locks, Burton-upon-Trent, which will
provide 190 homes.

This development will form part of the wider regeneration project which will result in a total of 2,500 new homes overall.

THE CHALLENGE

Lovell required a temporary bridge to access the site as the neighbouring pub shared the route.
The bridge needed to be able to accommodate all site traffic and be capable of supporting vehicles up to 44 tonnes. In addition, the bridge needed to span a 4-metrewide brook running through the construction site, and extra care had to be taken to avoid working on or close to a gas pipeline where the bridge was to be installed.

THE SOLUTION

Following an initial site visit and Lovell’s CBR (California Bearing Ratio) testing results, engineering calculations were made for the project, and the abutments needed for the ground conditions were confirmed.
Once the Sunbelt Rentals team had received a site induction from Lovell, an 11 x 3.7 metre vehicle bridge was constructed. Around 100 linear metres of aluminium trakway was also provided, which aided in the access of the 33tm Hiab lorry in delivering the bridge to the site in sections for the installation. Sunbelt Rentals and Lovell were in touch throughout the project to ensure that the delivery time and installation of the bridge coincided with the desired date for them to proceed with their project. After the bridge had been erected, it was decked with Emtek panels, which are constructed of hardwood. This created the 3.7 metre width required by the site. Lovell built the stone ramps, which the vehicles could use to cross the bridge on both sides, this allowed the Trakway used for the access to be removed from the site and cost saving for the customer.

Sunbelt Rentals worked seamlessly and collaborated well with Lovell, which gave them confidence in our ability to calculate the right solution for the project. It has been a pleasure to support this project.

THE RESULTS

The temporary access solution enabled Lovell to proceed with its construction project on schedule and on budget. Lovell greatly benefited from site traffic being able to use the bridge on the same day as the installation.
