Multiple Intelligence Hub

Sunbelt Rentals is proud to support young people across the UK. Whether it be getting an education, building a career or helping their mental and physical wellbeing, we are passionate about changing young lives for the better. It is also important that we make a difference where we operate and regularly work with our clients or industry partners to provide much needed support to smaller charities or causes near to our hundreds of depots nationwide.

Project and Location
Kent

When the opportunity came to support our customer Kier with their help for the Multiple Intelligence Hub (MIH) our teams seized the chance. MIH supports children with special educational needs and disabilities and is located just 10 miles from our Maidstone depot.

This small community organisation completes outstanding work in the local area and provides outdoor alternative learning experiences, outreach and well-being interventions for children and young adults with special educational need requirements.

The Challenge

MIH is situated on 8.5 acres of grounds and woodlands. They depend on support from volunteers and the local community to build learning areas and are always aiming to enrich what they have for the children. They know young people with disabilities often learn better through practical hands-on experience and have developed the experiences around the senses – sight, touch, smell and taste.

Since MIH was established in 2018, they have built a natural and sensory based environment, which includes a woodland retreat area, wildlife and sensory gardens, animal activities and seven hubs providing different activities.

In June 2022, they hosted a volunteering day to help progress the sensory gardens and make them more accessible for those with disabilities.

The Solution

On Wednesday the 29th June, the team at Sunbelt Rentals joined Kier and a team of volunteers from a local boys school to build raised flower beds, and complete other projects in the gardens.

We worked closely with MIH leading up to the day to ensure we gave our full support and encouraged them to ask for anything they required. As a result, we used recycled Sunbelt Rentals tractor tyres to create the raised planters, donating 20 in total. The large tyres proved to be a fantastic natural base for the raised planters. A team of five Sunbelt volunteers went on the day to put the tyres in position, fill them with compost and begin some of the planting ready for the children to complete and enjoy.

The Results

The day was a great success and delivered great value for MIH and all those who use its facilities.

Donna McClean, CEO and Project Manager at The Multiple Intelligence Hub said: "MIH rely on the help and support of their community to achieve our goals, and this is exactly what Sunbelt Rentals and Kier Highways helped us to do. With donations of tractor tyres for raised horticulture beds, plant machinery to help create an amphitheatre, as well as an abundance of people power and equipment to get the job done;

The projects that were achieved on this day would normally take MIH months to complete on their own. Sunbelt Rentals and Kier Highways got both these projects done in just one day.

Leaving us with beautiful areas and activities that MIH’s young people can now enjoy for many years to come.

Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for MIH. We couldn't have done many things without you.”

The success follows our previous support for MIH of providing a digger and dumper to begin the development of a wildlife pond, as well erecting temporary heras fencing and traffic management equipment.

We have also loaned our expertise and time to work with MIH and film, produce and edit a promotional video for them to help MIH continue to gain the vital support they require from the local community.

MIH make an incredible difference and we will continue to work with them, alongside our customer Kier to make a difference for the children with special educational needs.
