SOCIAL EQUALITY

Delivering social equality for everyone

Our Planet is focused on doing what we can to support social equality and the levelling up agenda.

We strive to help people achieve their career ambitions by supporting them into sustainable employment, no matter what their background. Sustainable employment not only provides security for an individual, but the halo effect opens up a whole wealth of opportunities that will transform and enhance their families lives and future prospects as well.

We know we can offer an abundance of exciting career paths to everyone with ambition, regardless of their background. We will help support local people in our communities to thrive, focusing on those whose need is greatest in order to support social mobility as far as possible.

At a community level, we focus on making a difference to our local communities through three flagship initiatives:

Our Social Equality Volunteering Programme

Our expert Social Impact Team works with a whole range of regional stakeholders, to create, launch and manage innovative solutions to social equality problems. They lead our social equality Volunteering Programme, which is ‘needs driven’, and operates from both ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’.

We manage ‘top down’ requests from our customers for volunteers to support local social equality initiatives around our contracts, and ‘bottom up’ grassroots requests to support projects that directly benefit local people. Examples include:

    • Volunteers from our Chadderton depot attending and co-hosting an Embassy Village fundraising event, to raise £3m to build a purpose-built homeless shelter in Manchester
    • Our Executive Team undertaking a site clearance project, to make way for a purpose-built Veteran Wellbeing Therapy Centre for the Spearhead Foundation at Barton Airfield

If you have a local social equality project you would like Sunbelt Rentals to get involved in, please email your local Regional Social Impact Committee:

Veterans Programme

Our Veterans programme was founded in 2021 and is aligned with Sunbelt Rentals Global Veterans Programme. We have identified over 150 veterans in the UK (2,000 globally) and we work with Walking With The Wounded, Project RECCE and Careers Transition Partnership to employ veterans with fantastic transferrable skills into our business.

In June 2022 we were delighted to be awarded MOD Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award, in recognition of our efforts to support veterans, service leavers and defence community members. We have established an internal Veterans Committee, with Tri Service Veteran Ambassadors supported by a team of regional, Cadet Force Adult Volunteer, Reservist and Service Family Representatives. Together we are developing our 4Rs programme for the UK, ensuring we have appropriate Resources, Recruitment, Reward and Retention strategies in place to best support and thank our military family for their service and sacrifice.

Under-Represented Groups Programme

We work in partnership with a number of social enterprises, Community Interest Companies (CICs) and charities to help support those who are under-represented and may need a helping hand in getting to where they want to be. Our Social Impact Team will develop long term partnerships and support the growth of local partners on their journey to resilience and growth.

Examples of this include: The Embassy Village project to support the homeless in Manchester and ex-offenders on ROTL (release on temporary licence) across various UK prisons and Women into Construction nationally.

Our Case Studies

Taking on the Cumbrian Challenge 2023 to support Walking With The Wounded

In 2023, Sunbelt Rentals was back for another Cumbrian Challenge, supporting our strategic partners Walking With The Wounded (WWTW).

Established in 2010, WWTW is a leading military charity that focuses on rehabilitating those veterans who are mentally, socially, or physically wounded, by helping to get them back on their feet.

This annual flagship fundraising event brings together individuals, organisations, and companies to raise money for those who need support, with the aim of getting them and their families the help they need.

Walking With The Wounded - Blue Monday Mental Health

We are proud supporters of Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), a leading military charity which has been changing lives and helping those who have served since 2010.

The WWTW team carries out vital work across the UK to support those struggling to settle back into society. This could be simply due to missing the wrap-around support network they were previously part of,  or perhaps due to hidden mental or more visible physical wounds from their time serving.

At Sunbelt Rentals we recognise the challenging path ex-service personnel may face and are absolutely committed to supporting veterans in their new lives via our international Veterans 4Rs Programme. Our aim is to provide appropriate Resources, Recruitment, Recognition and Retention support to help people from all areas of the Defence Community thrive in their new careers.

Sunbelt Rentals Big Winter Donation Drive

In 2022, Sunbelt Rentals launched its first, national Big Winter Donation Drive. Led by its network of internal Regional Social Impact Committees (RSICs), who deliver social impact locally to depots, the Big Winter Donation Drive supported different charitable causes each month from October to December.

Helping a Glasgow food bank strengthen its ability to deliver crucial services to the community

Carntyne Riddrie is a not-for-profit food bank serving people in one of the most deprived areas of Glasgow. Bolted on to the Carntyne and Riddrie Credit Union it helps the local community by giving food to those who need it. It is non-referral based so anyone can just turn up and it supports thousands of people each year. The food bank is run by a team of volunteers and relies solely on donations to operate.

A crucial part of Our Planet sustainability plans is to create skills, education and employment opportunities that help shape a better future for those involved and builds upon creating a more responsible future for our planet, our people and our communities.

Chapter One Online Reading Programme

We have joined the global effort to improve literacy for all by partnering with the charity Innovations for Learning through their Chapter One programme. A significant focus of Our Planet sustainability plans is to help give young people the best start to life and a fair chance to build a great future.

The Recruitment Junction charity

From all our nationwide depots we actively reach out within local communities to find ways we can generate social impact, providing support where it is most needed. One of our focus areas is social equality and improving opportunity and equality for those who are reforming themselves and trying to transform their lives.
